Kate was referred to our service by an existing client following diagnosis and treatment for breast cancer. Kate had undergone chemotherapy, radiotherapy and continued on to hormone therapy. This had left Kate feeling de-conditioned and out of kilter from her previous healthy and active routine.
Our action plan
Kate had always been fit and healthy before her cancer diagnosis, so the key aims for us were to help minimise the side-effects of treatment and, ideally, help her feel even fitter and stronger than she had previously.
Kate joined CP+R prior to starting radiotherapy and chemotherapy treatment. She visited us weekly – without fail – all the way through her treatment. By attending CP+R throughout, Kate reaped the physiological and psychological benefits, and resultantly was able to keep working rather than having to take time off. We focused on compound resistance and cardiovascular exercise to build her muscle mass, something which is commonly lost during chemo.
Kate’s resulTs
Kate’s tenacity to improve and her enjoyment of her CP+R sessions meant she quickly made significant improvements in her health and fitness. Within 6 months, Kate lost 4.4 kg of fat mass and was back running. Kate now runs 3 to 4 times per week and completes regular resistance exercise. She is the strongest she’s ever been, even compared to pre-diagnosis. This isn’t just important for Kate’s current function, but evidence shows that higher volumes of lean mass, fitness and general activity correlate to significantly lower risk of breast cancer recurrence.
Kate has now happily been in remission for almost 5 years and counting.
