Andrew was referred to CP+R by his oncologist following a prostate cancer diagnosis and subsequent surgery to remove the cancer. Thereafter, Andrew started hormone therapy, which whilst minimising further cancer progression risk often leads to an increase in fat mass and reduction in muscle mass, which can instead increase cardiovascular disease risk.
Our action plan
Andrew’s clinical assessment revealed his muscle mass was decreasing and this posed a risk to cancer progression. Therefore, our plan was to develop muscle mass through resistance training, whilst also improving cardiorespiratory fitness to help Andrew continue enjoying the outdoor life he had been used to.
Through Andrew’s programme we employed the concept of progressive overload in large muscle group movements to maximise the results from strength-based exercise. Since testosterone was limited through medication it was important that strength training was consistent and optimised to maximise muscle mass gains supported by a high protein dietary intake.
At the same time, Andrew had a cycling and walking-based aerobic programme to help him to achieve his aim of completing endurance walking challenges, lasting up to 12 hours or more.
Andrew’s results
Through his work with us, Andrew able to increase his muscle mass by 2.8 kg within 6 months, whilst also improving his overall fitness. This is an exceptional result considering the medication Andrew is on is often associated with muscle mass loss and fat mass gain.
Andrew has also since completed several endurance-based challenges with our support and he continues to plot new and more challenging goals for himself.
